Oilers handed first loss of season

The Newport-Mesa Lakers did something that no team had done yet

this season, beat the West Huntington Beach Oilers.

The Lakers (3-2) gave up the lead in the fourth quarter, but rallied back

in the closing minutes to pull out a 38-34 victory in National Junior

Basketball Division I boys weekend action.

West Huntington Beach, now 4-1, overcame a four-point fourth quarter

deficit to take the lead, but Oiler big man Tim Hoffman (nine points,

seven rebounds) fouled out later in the period, and Newport-Mesa

outscored West Huntington Beach, 7-3, down the stretch.

Jeff Holliday led the way for the Oilers with 14 points and seven

rebounds, and Luke Hazelwood, Lucas Puttock, Chris Potrykus, and Robbie

Dick crashed the boards for a combined 23 rebounds.

DIVISION II

Navy Blue Bruins 46, Baby Blue Bruins 18

A balanced scoring attack, which featured seven players scoring at least

four points, plus an effective trap and press, helped the Navy Blue

Bruins improve to 4-1. Brian Cranmer scored 12 points and Timmy Mahoney

added eight points for the winners.

FOUNTAIN VALLEY NJB

DIVISION I

Magic 50, Heat 37

Ricky Hagen scored 14 of his team-high 19 points in the first half as the

Magic opened up a 21-11 lead en route to improving to 5-0 and retaining

sole possession of first place.

Hagen also contributed six assists and two rebounds, Nguyen Dau finished

with 11 points and three steals, Nate Hagland dominated the rebounding

department with 16 rebounds (along with nine points), and Jason Edwards,

who added three assists, led the Magic on defense.

Paul Youusef scored 13 of his game-high 20 points in the final period for

the Heat, who also received 13 points from Viet Nguyen and three blocked

shots and five rebounds from Robert Macksoud.

DIVISION II

Red Storm 37, Lakers 15

In a battle of unbeatens, Samer Haddad scored 13 points, Corey Ferraro

and Eric Ferraro scored seven points apiece, Dustin Aoyagi added six

points, and both Andrew Olmsted and Hemal Patel led the way on defense

for the victorious Red Storm (5-0).

DIVISION III

Bulls 42, HB Seahawks 19

Greg Goldberg came up with 10 steals and eight rebounds, Tyler Freeleaux

matched eight points with eight rebounds, and Russell Westphal scored

seven points with six rebounds, and his pinpoint passing gave him six

assists as the Bulls rolled over Huntington Beach.

SuperSonics 34, Hornets 24

Matt Empting scored seven points to go along with five steals and Dillon

Gearin also scored seven points to lead the Hornets in defeat.
