WHALE-WATCHING TERMS

Spouting -- Sometimes called a blow, the visible exhaling of air, water

vapor and water drops through the whale’s blowhole.

Breaching -- When a whale leaps almost clear of the water and falls back

with a huge splash.

Sounding -- When a whale shows its tail.

Spyhopping -- When a whale pushes itself vertically out of the water

until it can see. A spyhop can last from 13 to 30 seconds.
