Boys basketball: Eagles slip past Anaheim, 57-56

COSTA MESA - Estancia High senior Jason Simco’s free throw with 12
seconds left gave the host Eagles enough to hold off Anaheim, 57-56, in a
nonleague boys basketball game Wednesday.
Estancia senior Darshaun Garner paced the winners (11-5) with 19 points
and what Coach Rich Boyce estimated at 12 rebounds.
Junior Elisar Maldonado scored 11 points off the bench for the winners.
“Elisar played great,” Boyce said. “He was the key in the second half. We
had no spark for this game, but he gave us some. I don’t know if we were
looking ahead to (Friday’s Pacific Coast League opener at cross-town
rival Costa Mesa), or what.”
Jesus Salcedo led the Colonists (10-5) with 20 points. Anaheim missed a
last-second shot to help the Eagles escape.
