Girls basketball: Mesa prevails, 58-48
HAWAIIAN GARDENS - Costa Mesa High senior Autumn Smith collected 24
points, nine rebounds and eight blocked shots, but her teammates
finalized a 58-48 Artesia Tournament girls basketball victory over Schurr
without her Wednesday at the Hawaiian Gardens Center.
Smith fouled out with 4:23 left and the Mustangs (6-4) ahead, 47-43. But
senior guards Nancy Hatsushi (11 points and 12 assists) and Jenny Earnest
(10 points and 10 assists), along with junior backup center Maria Lazos,
helped widen the margin in a consolation game for no placing.
“(Lazos) did a great job on their 6-foot center,” Mesa Coach Jim Weeks
said.
Smith was second-team all-tournament in the 32-team event.
The Mustangs return to action Monday in their own Winter Classic, hosting
Whitney at 6:20 p.m.
