HAWAIIAN GARDENS - Costa Mesa High’s girls basketball team will be
trying to improve on a 5-4 record with a 2:45 test against Schurr today
in a consolation final at the Artesia/Bellflower Tournament following
Tuesday’s 64-58 victory over Warren.
The Mustangs, who jumped to a 42-21 lead before Warren got back into the
game with three bank shots from three-point territory, saw their
advantage melt to 55-52 before taking control of the issue down the
stretch.
Senior Autumn Smith was the catalyst, connecting for 23 points on
10-of-17 shooting, pulling down 14 rebounds, coming up with five steals
and three blocked shots.
Joining her in the winner’s circle was Nancy Hatsushi, who had 18 points
and nine assists, while Jenny Earnest knocked down 13 points.
It was one of Mesa’s better efforts from a team lacking the presence of
forward Laura Muniz, who has been sidelined with flu.
Mesa Coach Jim Weeks said he was hopeful Muniz would be in playing form
by the time Pacific Coast League play unfolds Jan. 7 when the Mustangs
open the season against visiting Estancia.
