TORRANCE - Corona del Mar High’s girls soccer team continues its
impressive start by winning its group at Saturday’s pool play in the
South Torrance Tournament with a victory over Redondo and a tie with
Bishop Montgomery.
In the first game, goals from Elisha Morgan and Julia Livingston led to a
2-0 CdM victory over Redondo Union. Goalie Britta Vogele had four saves
in the shutout.
In the second game, the Sea Kings (3-0-1) tied defending CIF Southern
Section Division IV champ Bishop Montgomery, 1-1. The Sea Kings took the
lead 10 minutes before halftime when freshman Jennifer Long blasted a
shot from top of the goalie box. But the Knights scrambled to tie the
game with 10 minutes left to salvage a tie.
“I thought we should have gotten the victory,” CdM Coach Ron Evans said.
“We outplayed them. It was a hard-fought match.”
CdM will face Edison in the quarterfinals Saturday. Its next game though,
is against perennial power Woodbridge.
“I do that on purpose,” Evans said about the tough schedule. “Playing
against strong competition will only make us better.”
