COSTA MESA - Costa Mesa High freshman Sharon Day made her varsity
debut with a goal and an assist to help the host Mustangs handle
Saddleback, 4-0, in a nonleague girls soccer game Thursday.
Day’s corner kick set up senior Candace Nicholson’s goal to open the
scoring, then Day converted herself to make it a 2-0 halftime lead.
Juniors Sarah Smallcomb and Katie Roche added second-half goals and the
defense earned praise from Coach Dan Johnston.
Margaret Landeros (two saves) and Nichelle Janti (one) split the
goalkeeping duties, while Fernanda Valazco was an offensive catalyst.
Lisa Dunn added an assist for the Mustangs (1-0), who host Long Beach
Wilson Saturday at 10 a.m.
