Costa Mesa fire crews used the jaws of life to extricate two individuals from a vehicle that ran into a tree near the intersection of Baker Street and Newport Boulevard during a late-night collision, officials reported.
Battalion Chief Chris Coates said a call came in shortly after 12:30 a.m. on the 600 block of West Baker Street. First responders arrived to find a BMW in pieces and surrounding a tree. Two occupants, a male and a female, were trapped inside.
Using the jaws of life and several other tools in what Coates called a “complex extrication,” crews worked on the wreckage for approximately 15 minutes before the driver and passenger could be safely removed.
“Due to the extensive damage to the vehicle, the extrication was complex and required our crews to methodically and carefully remove the twisted metal that surrounded and trapped the victims in the vehicle,” Coates said Wednesday morning.
The individuals were transported to a local trauma center. No additional updates as to their medical condition was being reported Wednesday morning.
Costa Mesa police spokesman Roxi Fyad said the department’s Traffic Safety Bureau was investigating the collision, which took place closer to where Baker meets Enterprise Street.
While it’s unclear what caused the crash, Fyad said no other vehicles are thought to have been contributing factors.
“At this point in the investigation, no arrests have been made, and there is no suspicion drugs or alcohol was involved,” she said.
