Non-injury traffic collision sends water sky-high from fire hydrant in Newport Beach

It was a wet morning for a few Newport Beach first responders on Monday, but not because of rain.
Firefighters responded to a call about an accident near Jamboree and eastbound Ford Road at around 10:30 a.m. A landscape vehicle crashed into a fire hydrant on the curb and sheered it, authorities said.
No injuries were reported and the street was temporarily closed for less than 15 minutes, according to department spokeswoman Natalie May.
About seven firefighters responded in addition to four police officers to help direct traffic.
May said hydrants typically flow at about 1,000-plus gallons a minute.
Water shut-off valves were immediately located and accessed. Firefighters shut down the hydrant within five minutes of arriving on the scene to limit the loss of water from the incident.
May said there was no water damage to surrounding homes and most of the water was diverted to storm drains in the area.
Newport Beach firefighters respond to similar calls about incidents like Monday’s at least once a month throughout the city.
