Costa Mesa man arrested on suspicion of assault with deadly weapon after allegedly pointing gun at driver

A Costa Mesa man was arrested Sunday night on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and driving under the influence of alcohol after he allegedly pointed a handgun at another driver near the intersection of Victoria and Maple Street.

Roxi Fyad, a spokeswoman for the Costa Mesa Police Department, said Monday police responded to the scene shortly after 8:30 p.m. Sunday after the victim contacted the authorities and then continued to follow behind the suspect’s vehicle until officers arrived.

Police caught up with the armed driver — identified Monday as Arturo Silva-Ramos, 45, of Costa Mesa — at the intersection of Pomona and Sterling avenues, near Pomona Elementary School, and detained Silva-Ramos as he exited the vehicle.

A loaded handgun was recovered from the vehicle, and Silva-Ramos was arrested at the scene without incident and taken to jail, where he was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, carrying a loaded firearm in a vehicle in a public place, driving under the influence of alcohol and driving without a license.

Silva-Ramos appeared in court Tuesday, where he pleaded not guilty to all charges, according to court records. He is being held at Orange County’s Theo Lacy Facility on $25,000 bail. His next appearance is scheduled for June 29.
