Nautical Museum to launch local hero exhibit

The Newport Harbor Nautical Museum will launch an exhibit, “Extraordinary People,” on Tuesday that gives a retrospective of local hero Nick Scandone.

Scandone, who died in 2009 at the age of 42, won the gold medal at the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing, China, six years after being stricken with Lou Gehrig’s disease.

The local yachtsman will be the first to be recognized in the ongoing exhibit of diverse and iconic heroes of the sea, according to a museum press release.

The museum will hold a public opening reception forum with a presentation lead by Gary Jobson, an America’s Cup winner and the president of U.S. Sailing.
